WE NEED A GLOBAL & TRANSPARENT CLIMATE ACCOUNTING SYSTEM
TO ACHIEVE THE PARIS AGREEMENT
We are calling on you and all our planetary stakeholders to contribute in the development of an open source and collectively owned global climate accounting system, platform and portal.
The collaborative hackathon will begin on November 16th at a 2-day on-campus launch at Yale University and continue for two weeks in decentralized efforts around the world until December 6th at the UNFCCC COP25 summit. The project will continue as an open source initiative with further events and collective development sprints throughout 2020.

EARTH'S CARBON CLOCK IS TICKING

We are all planetary stakeholders and we have a shared account in the climate system.
Our aim is to materialize this shared account as a decentralized integrated system to enable climate accounting, climate action and climate finance.

Our shared climate future —consistent with a more resilient Earth system — requires a higher level of participation, collaboration and interoperability among climate stakeholders; from established government and private actors, to new climate action innovators and, ultimately, individual citizens. A tool that seamlessly integrates all elements in a transparent and participatory climate accounting system cannot be developed in silo.
To develop and disseminate an open-source, integrated system and platform for helping the world transparently account and track its climate pledges and actions to prevent anthropogenic warming above 1.5oC.

COLLABATHON DOMAINS & PROMPTS
This collaborative hackathon is structured around 5 integrated climate domains and the software stack layers proposed in the open climate project. The prompts and bounties which you and your team will be hacking are based on the intersection between the domains and the stack layout.

SELECTED PROMPTS & BOUNTIES
We are providing different challenges for you to solve. You can choose the climate domain that you are most passionate about and work on one of its specific prompts, or tackle a specific technical bounty.
Earth's Carbon Ledger — Build a near real-time atmospheric carbon budget counter with decentralized scientific consensus and blockchain-based records.
The Paris Smart Contract Agreement — We started to transcribe the Paris Agreement into an Ethereum-based solidity smart contract. Improve & extend it to include more articles and functionalities.
Spatial contracts for Nested Accounting — Develop metadata schemas and contracts so that the mitigation and adaptation outcomes of non-state actors —like cities, companies and individuals— can be included and accounted under the respective Nationally Determined Contributions where they are retire.
ITMO Terminal — Article 6 of the Paris Agreement allows for the international transfer of mitigation outcomes so that parties can collaborate on their 'NDC'. Design a prototype of an investment and trading 'Terminal' that can act as a one-stop portal
Carbon pricing automation — Design a smart contract that can automate the calculation and collection of a global carbon price based on provable GHG emissions.
This challenge requires collective intelligence from the domains of programming, data science, machine learning, graphic and content design, blockchain development as well as climate and carbon science, accounting and more.
You don't need a team to sign up! All participants register as individuals. We will ask you upon your registration for your theme preferences and skill-set. Close to the event, you will have the opportunity to form teams with all necessary skill-sets around prompts and bounties.
An ideal team could be composed of students with the following backgrounds:

If you don't fit into the categories but have valuable expertise that you can contribute to our teams, please feel free to apply and indicate what you can contribute.
To give you guidance and inputs to solve your challenge, most teams will be facilitated by a start-up, an organization or research institute with expertise in the respective field. These prompt hosts wills be announced soon.

All minds around the to world are invited to hack with us and become an owner of this collective open source project. We welcome all genders, nationalities, identities and backgrounds. The participation is entirely free.

Be part of a landmark event that brings together inspiring and passionate people from all over the world to solve this grant challenge together that affects us all - all people across continents and generations. This is the first large-scale open source attempt of its kind to solve the climate challenge together. It is an experiment to prove the power of radical open source collaboration.
We will all work on different parts of the same global puzzle. This can't be done alone, so our approach is to leverage our collective and decentralized intelligence and generate collective ownership. Your commitment to this mission will show the world that the global Climate challenge is solvable together - and give state and non-state actors a framework for doing so.

How do I register?

What if I don't have a team?
You don't need a team to sign up! Just register and fill in your skills and background. We will help you find a team on our platform close to the event. You will be able to form diverse teams around the prompts that fascinate you the most. This will give you the opportunity to meet fantastic new people and inspire each other! You can also join teams at other nodes or remotely.
How can I join?
You can join us either at Yale, at one of the global nodes or participate remotely from your base. All halls and key-notes will be broadcasted to our global nodes and remote participants. As a remote participant, you can join a team virtually or work on a bounty independently.
We will shortly announce all global nodes that are hosting a collabathon instance and prompts. If you would like to be a node in our global network, let us know!
